MCL Reconstruction for Restoring Knee Stability and Function
Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) reconstruction is a surgical procedure aimed at repairing a torn MCL, a key ligament located on the inside of the knee joint. The MCL plays an essential role in stabilizing the knee and preventing it from bending inward. An injury to the MCL can occur due to a sudden blow or force to the outer side of the knee, commonly seen in sports like football, soccer, and skiing.
During the procedure, a graft is used to replace the damaged ligament, typically harvested from the patient’s own tissue (like the hamstring tendon or patellar tendon) or from a donor. The surgeon makes small incisions around the knee to access the damaged ligament, often using minimally invasive techniques such as arthroscopy. In more severe cases, an open surgery may be required for better access and repair.
Post-surgery, a rehabilitation program is critical to restore strength, flexibility, and knee function. Physical therapy helps rebuild muscle strength, improve range of motion, and stabilize the knee joint. Full recovery usually takes several months, with gradual return to sports and activities as knee stability improves.
MCL reconstruction is highly effective for treating severe MCL tears, particularly for athletes and active individuals, helping them regain knee stability and function, ultimately allowing them to return to their sport or daily activities with confidence.
